Louth General Election Canidate Erin McGreehan has welcomed Fianna Fáil’s pledge to launch an extensive action plan with 76 targeted measures to ensure a rights-based approach to disability if returned to Government.

If returned to Government, Fianna Fáil will:

  • Double the Housing Adaptation Grant and broaden eligibility.
  • Provide annual funding to increase personal assistance hours by at least an additional 20,000 hours per year.
  • Deliver more home support hours.
  • Align Disability Home Support pay rates with Older Persons Services.
  • Rollout Personalised Budgets nationally.
  • Develop a multi-year capital plan for investment in residential and independent living options.
  • Promote shared services in independent living housing developments.
  • Continue work to end the practice of placing young people with disabilities in nursing homes.

Commenting on the party’s vision for improving the lives of people with disabilities, McGreehan said: “Fianna Fáil wants to drive forward meaningful reforms, introduce new, inclusive policies and improve disability payments to ensure a more equitable and accessible Ireland.

“The truth is that despite the fact that we have invested significantly in this area since coming into Government in 2020, and despite the fact that those delivering these services across the country are often going above and beyond what they’re asked to do, it is just not where it needs to be.

“There needs to be significant Investment and Reform.

“If returned to Government, we will deliver this Investment and Reform by implementing a comprehensive action plan with 76 targeted measures to ensure a rights-based approach to disability is embedded throughout Irish society. This is grounded in our unwavering commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

“Through these and further actions and through being guided by the principle ‘nothing about us, without us,’ Fianna Fáil will continue to place the voices of people with disabilities at the centre of policy-making.

I have, for the last 4 years been supporting and advocating for people with disabilities. I want to continue that work in the Dáil, and be a really strong voice for people with disabilities in Louth.”
