Ireland’s Safe Routes to School Programme is now among the largest school active travel programmes in Europe
Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Erin McGreehan has welcomed that threeschools in Louth are among 83 schools nationwide that have been selected for inclusion in round five of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme.
The three local schools are:
- Monksland National School
- St. Mochta’s National School
- Sacred Heart School Drogheda (Post-primary)
The initiative is designed to transform the school run by installing safety infrastructure such as “School Zone” pencil-shaped bollards, colourful road markings, upgraded footpaths, and enhanced pedestrian crossings to slow traffic and prioritise student safety.
Deputy McGreehan said:
“I am delighted to see three more local schools being brought into this important programme. This investment will provide the safety measures necessary to make walking, wheeling, and cycling a realistic and safe choice for our students and their families.”
This latest expansion brings the total number of participating schools across the country to 609, making journeys to school safer, more attractive and more accessible for children across Ireland.
Surveys collected from participating schools show cycling to school has increased by almost 49 percent, walking has increased by eight percent, while car use has fallen by more than 10 percent. Scooting has increased by over 17 percent, and public transport use has increased by almost 16 percent.
Deputy McGreehan added:
“By creating a safer environment at the school gate, we are not just keeping our children safe; we are also encouraging lifelong habits of physical activity and helping to reduce congestion in our towns and villages.”
She concluded:
“Thanks to the school communities, parents, and Louth County Council for their engagement with the NTA and An Taisce to bring these projects to fruition, ensuring that local students of all abilities have access to safe, sustainable transport to and from school.”
More than €50 million has been invested in Safe Routes to School between 2021 and 2025, with an additional €24 million allocated in 2026 with ongoing funding commitments supporting the expansion of the Programme to additional schools.
