In a recent statement in the Seanad, Senator Erin McGreehan expressed her support for Ireland’s national carbon farming framework.

McGreehan said the framework has potential to empower farmers, foresters and landowners to take tangible climate actions. The framework aims to facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and enhance carbon capture, contributing to broader environmental sustainability efforts.

McGreehan said: “It is extremely important to have EU-wide coordinated monitoring and reporting methods to ensure effective implementation and measurement of carbon capture initiatives on farms.

“We need a constructive debate in the Seanad with the Minister of Agriculture so we can discuss the collaboration across the EU in establishing accurate measurement mechanisms for current carbon capture levels on farms.”

Having championed  in previous parliamentary debates, McGreehan also highlighted the potential for Ireland to achieve carbon neutrality swiftly, especially on small farms, through comprehensive auditing and enhancement of for example soil quality.

She said: “I have consistently supported the examination of carbon capture in agricultural practices and would welcome the opportunity for the Minister for Agriculture to address the House on this crucial matter.

“We need a unified approach towards sustainable farming practices that align with climate action goals and a full understanding of all practices to support farming families endure into the future.

“We must also examine how the carbon farming framework can be worked upon to secure the retaining of the all important Nitrates Derogation.

“The impending framework represents a significant step towards fostering environmental resilience and securing the future of Irish agriculture. It is one important way to advance sustainable practices for the benefit of both the agricultural sector and the environment.”
