A series of investment projects are currently underway at Louth County Hospital, according to information provided to local TD Erin McGreehan in response to a parliamentary question to the Minister for Health.

Deputy McGreehan sought an update on the Government’s plans for investment in the hospital and the progress of key infrastructure projects.

In response, the Minister confirmed that a number of significant developments are progressing, including ongoing upgrades to the Medical 1 and Step-Down wards, which will enhance both the patient and clinical environment. Flooring and painting works are also underway, with all upgrades due to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

The Minister also confirmed that a new Minor Procedure Room is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026, while the procurement process for a new shop facility at the hospital is due to conclude in the fourth quarter of this year.

In addition, recently announced weekend radiology services for the Minor Injury Unit are expected to become fully operational during the third quarter of this year.

The Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to investing in healthcare services in County Louth, recognising the growing demand on Louth County Hospital. Since 2020, the hospital’s budget has increased by more than 40%, while staffing levels have risen by more than 9%.

Louth County Hospital currently provides 93 inpatient and day-case beds, delivering palliative, step-down and rehabilitation care. This includes an additional eight beds that have been added since 2020.

Speaking on the investments, Deputy McGreehan said:

“Louth County Hospital plays an integral role in providing healthcare to people across County Louth and the wider region. It is essential that investment in our health infrastructure reflects the importance of the hospital and the growing demand for its services.

“These projects will help ensure the hospital has the facilities needed to meet the healthcare needs of our growing population, while continuing to modernise the services available to patients.

“Once completed, these investments will improve the patient experience, reduce waiting times for certain services and strengthen the hospital’s ability to deliver high quality care for the people of Louth.”
