Deputy Erin McGreehan has said that we are living with the failure of partition, as a new initiative to examine the constitutional future of Ireland has been announced.
The Futures Study Initiative was recently announced by the Taoiseach to research the potential of a united Ireland as well as other scenarios. The body will examine three core scenarios, a 32-county all-Ireland State, an all-island State with a devolved Government in Northern Ireland; and maintaining the status quo.
The plan was presented to the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party on Tuesday evening, and the Louth TD said she, along with other colleagues, met with the Taoiseach previously to discuss the plans.
“I support the Taoiseach on the establishment of the Futures Study Initiative. As someone from a border county, I believe that we are living with the failure of partition, and I see partition as a failure of politics.
“The Good Friday Agreement was signed when I was in secondary school, and it opened up an optimism in me and my peers, that change was possible. It was proof that politics works, and it was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be in politics from a young age and why I joined Fianna Fáil.
The Louth TD said the initiative is an important step towards planning for Ireland’s future and ensuring that the conversation around reunification is inclusive and grounded in evidence.
“The reunification of Ireland is a core value of the Fianna Fáil party and as the Republican Party, it’s something Fianna Fáil is dedicated to, and has been since it’s foundation. Every person who calls this island home deserves to thrive economically, socially, and politically.”
Deputy McGreehan said the initiative would provide an opportunity to examine the different constitutional options available and consider what they could mean for communities across the island.
