Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Erin McGreehan has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal to extend Ireland’s nitrates derogation, describing it as “an important and timely step that will shape the future of Irish farming.”

She said the proposal shows that Brussels “recognises the distinctive grass based system we have in Ireland and understands how vital the derogation is for keeping family farms sustainable and economically sound.”

“This proposal is hugely significant for Irish farming,” McGreehan said. “Farmers are facing intense pressures every day and having continuity in the derogation gives them the certainty they need for planning investment and long term environmental improvements.”

McGreehan noted that member states are expected to examine the proposal in the second week of December before it returns to the Commission for final approval.

She expressed her appreciation for the work carried out at European level to drive progress on the issue.

“I want to acknowledge Commissioner Michael McGrath for the work he has put into advancing this and to recognise former Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue who pushed consistently for movement on this in Europe.”

“What we need now is a straightforward and effective extension that delivers real clarity and avoids unnecessary complications.”

McGreehan concluded by reaffirming Fianna Fáil’s support for farmers across the country.

“In Fianna Fáil we will keep working to secure certainty for farmers and to ensure that Irish agriculture stays competitive and environmentally responsible. This proposal is a strong step forward and I will continue to press for its approval.”
