The League of Ireland is built on community, family and a shared love of football. What happened in Oriel Park last Friday night does not reflect the League of Ireland that I know.

Young children should be able to attend local sporting events without fear for their safety. It is deeply concerning that a child was injured during this incident, and I wish him and his family a full and speedy recovery.

In recent years, the League of Ireland has gone from strength to strength, with growing attendances, increasing interest and a rapidly expanding fanbase. As the league continues to grow it is vital that the core values on which it is built are protected and upheld.

I attended the match last Friday with my sons and witnessed first-hand the professionalism shown by security staff and An Garda Síochána throughout the evening. Their actions were focused on keeping families safe and preventing any further escalation and they deserve recognition for that work.

Unfortunately, what occurred in Oriel Park is not unique to Irish football and has been seen across leagues throughout Europe. However, that cannot be used as an excuse. There are lessons to be learned from other countries in how football authorities and clubs deal with the small cohort of individuals who seek to bring the game into disrepute.

Going forward the FAI must carefully examine how it responds to this type of criminal and reckless behaviour.

This needs to be a line in the sand not a starting point for further disorder.
