Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has called for substantial support for the SME sector in case of a looming trade war across the globe.

During consultations with local businesses in her home county of Louth, Deputy McGreehan has said there is genuine concern from businesses as to how they will be supported if impacted due to tariffs.

“These are extremely worrying and turbulent times globally. It is also a very de-stablising time for local SMEs across our communities. I know this from my conversations with local businesses in my own constituency of Louth.

“In the Programme for Government there are commitments to address the cost burden on the SME sector. We must ensure that these commitments are met with action, through initiatives such as the small business unit in the Department of Enterprise,” she said.

Deputy McGreehan raised these concerns in dialogue with the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris. He responded by assuring the Deputy that the government is committed to reducing the VAT rate on hospitality in the Budget.

He went on to say that the process to establish the small business unit for enterprise, tourism and employment in the Department is under way, and that the government is keeping an open mind to ways to support sectors of the economy in any trade war.

Deputy McGreehan has welcomed the Tánaiste’s response but reaffirmed her position and concerns of local businesses who are involved in exporting goods.

“We must support our SMEs during any potential trade war. These businesses are the backbone of our economy. They provide top class Irish produce around the globe, and their concerns must be heard.

As long as I am in Dáil Éireann, I will be a supportive voice for SMEs,” she concluded.
