Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the appointment of Dr. Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid as the first full ambassador of Palestine to Ireland.
Speaking on this, Senator Erin McGreehan said “I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Jilan Wahba last year amid the worsening situation in Gaza. I look forward to engaging with her in the next session through my continued membership in the Ireland-Palestinian Parliamentary Friendship Group. I have also written to the ambassador to congratulate her on her appointment”.
“The Irish Government has indicated its intention to progress legislation banning trade in goods sourced from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. However, this will only proceed once the legislation has been substantially amended to comply with EU law and the Irish Constitution, as advised by Attorney General Rossa Fanning. Additionally, the Republic has announced that it will no longer award contracts for military goods to Israeli arms companies”.
“To those who continue to misrepresent my position on the Palestinian question, I would like to clarify that I have remained a member of the Ireland-Palestinian Parliamentary Friendship Group while resigning from the Ireland-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group. Similarly, to those who misrepresent my stance on the Ukrainian invasion, I remind them that I am the only politician from Louth on the Russian banned list”.
“On November 16th, 2022, Russia’s foreign ministry announced that it had placed 52 Irish politicians on a “stop list,” barring them from entering the country. This list includes prominent Government figures such as Taoiseach Micheál Martin and myself. Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan, also on the list, noted that many Fianna Fáil politicians have been vocal in expressing Ireland’s opposition to and condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine. President Putin has accurately identified many of the Irish politicians who have genuinely opposed his war of aggression against Ukraine”.
Senator Erin McGreehan has the dubious honour of being the only politician from Louth included on the banned list.
