Senator McGreehan has questioned why the planned fare decreases for Drogheda commuters, scheduled by the NTA to come into effect in September, will now not be implemented until 2025.
Senator McGreehan said she is engaging with her party colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Transport James Lawless, on behalf of local commuters, requesting that the fares proceed as originally planned by the NTA.
Senator McGreehan said: “After years of campaigning, I was glad to see that Drogheda was included in the Short Hop Zone (SHZ) in the revised fare strategy announced by the NTA at the end of April 2023.
“According to this strategy, reduced fares for Drogheda commuters were to come into effect from this September.
“This was the case until earlier this month, when the NTA announced the fare changes were not to apply until Q1 2025.
“I was devastated to hear of this delay, announced so soon before the changes to come into effect. Being included in the SHZ will make an enormous difference for Drogheda commuters and many will have made life choices with a view towards the fare changes taking place this September.
“I am continuing to engage with my Fianna Fáil colleagues and Minister James Lawless in order to make sure the NTA upholds their commitment to introduce these fare changes that will make such a positive change for local commuters.”
