Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Deputy Erin McGreehan, has welcomed the introduction of new Local Community Safety Partnerships by Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan today.
The Partnerships replace Joint Policing Committees and will serve as multi-agency community-led structures to address and improve safety in communities
Local Community Safety Partnerships are established to enable public safety at a local level right across the country. That will take place with numerous stakeholders such as An Garda Síochána, local businesses, state agencies, local residents, local councillors, local authority officials, and representatives from the HSE and the Child and Family Agency Tusla.
Members representing youth groups, the older population, new and minority groups, business and education representatives will also be included.
Deputy McGreehan has welcomed this very positive development that comes into effect from today and delivers on a key commitment in the Programme for Government.
“I am delighted today to see action from my colleague Minister Jim O’Callaghan on how we can make our communities safer nationwide, but in particular across Louth”, she said.
She added: “Community safety has been an important topic for me. Having had engagement with the Minister on several topics such as community safety, seeing that engagement being followed with action is promising and I thank him for that.
Each LCSP can hold as many meetings as needed but they must hold at least 6 meetings annually.
Measures brought in today will allow members of the public be allowed to attend one of these meetings, while Oireachtas members and all locally elected public representatives will have opportunities to engage by attending at least one also.
McGreehan has encouraged relevant stakeholders across Louth to engage with the new Local Community Safety Partnership, to ensure that public safety can be targeted and efficient.
“The purpose of these new Partnerships is to ensure we target issues and ensure community safety efficiently. We want to hear from all relevant stakeholders on the issues around safety across Louth.
Concluding McGreehan stated: “These Partnerships will play a major role in enhancing public safety across the country, something that was a key measure in the Programme for Government. I am delighted today that this commitment has now been established, and I look forward to seeing it up and running.
