Scheme open for applications until 24 June

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Erin McGreehan has welcomed the opening of applications for the Fuel Support Scheme for Specialist Horticulture.

The opening of applications for the scheme, which forms part of the €100 million allocated by Government for fuel income supports for farmers, fishers and agricultural contractors in response to the Middle East crisis, was announced by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for Horticulture, Niall Collins TD.

Deputy McGreehan said the scheme will provide important support for growers who have been affected by rising fuel costs.

“Horticulture makes a valuable contribution to our local and national economy and supports jobs throughout the agri-food sector.

“Specialist growers have faced significant increases in operating costs in recent years, particularly when it comes to fuel. This scheme will provide targeted support to growers producing crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, strawberries, herbs and chillies and help ease some of those pressures.

“It is important that Government continues to support food producers and growers who play such an important role in supplying fresh, high-quality produce.”

Deputy McGreehan also encouraged people to support Irish growers where possible.

“Choosing Irish produce helps support local businesses, local jobs and farming families. Consumers have a real opportunity to back Irish growers and strengthen the domestic horticulture sector.

“I would encourage all eligible growers in Louth to familiarise themselves with the scheme and ensure their applications are submitted before the deadline.”

Minister Collins said: “Government recognises the exceptional pressure that has been placed on specialist horticulture growers because of the sudden increase in the cost of fuel. The National Horticulture Strategy requires a strong and solid foundation from which to grow the horticulture industry, and this financial support package is critical in ensuring the ongoing economic viability of specialist horticulture growers.”

The Fuel Support Scheme for Specialist Horticulture has been introduced to support specialist horticultural growers facing unprecedented increases in fuel costs. The scheme will provide a once-off payment to eligible growers to help mitigate the impact of increased fuel prices.

The scheme is open to commercial horticulture growers producing tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, strawberries, chillies, herbs and hydroponically grown lettuce in eligible structures using eligible fuels.

Applications can be made online and the scheme will remain open until midnight on Wednesday, 24 June 2026.
