Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has expressed her “deep shock and disbelief” at the unfolding events at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

It is understood that a number of patients treated at the hospital are this week being informed of the miscategorisation of pre-cancerous cells, as part of open disclosure procedures within the HSE.

Speaking today, Deputy McGreehan said, “I am in utter shock and disbelief at this news. My thoughts are with all of the patients and families affected. This is a devastating development for people who placed their trust in the health system.

“This should never have happened. It will understandably cause significant distress and anxiety for those impacted. Our Lady of Lourdes must ensure that clear communication is provided to every patient concerned.”

Deputy McGreehan stressed the need for stronger oversight and accountability, highlighting the importance of patient safety as a central duty of care.

She added: “The patients involved deserve full clarity and accountability. What they are going through is unacceptable, and we must make certain that such failures do not happen again.

“I will be engaging with Government colleagues to demand that the ongoing review concludes as quick as possible to provide clarity for patients. We must uphold the highest standards of care and patient safety, and I will make sure to reaffirm that position in these engagements.
