Local Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan has said she is delighted that the second tranche of payments for farmers of the Cooley Peninsula has taken place today.
McGreehan, who has been an avid advocate for the farmers in the area, has said these payments will give some farmers reprieve after the devastating storm in 2023.
The announcement was made today by Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon today.
“I am delighted to hear today that second tranche of payments have now commenced to farmers in the Cooley Peninsula. The storm had a devastating impact on all of these farmers, on their land, on their fodder, and on their lane ways and fencing.
Deputy McGreehan has said these payments will give farmers some reprieve and will help them replace any damage and lost fodder.
“The payments totally €249,000 was a commitment of the last government, and I’d like to say a big thanks to former Minister for Agriculture and my party colleague Charlie McConalogue on this. I know he was especially determined through my work with him to help deliver this for the farmers of the Cooley Peninsula.
Concluding, Deputy McGreehan says she recognises it has been a long and difficult road for those effected but hopes today’s payments help all farmers repair their land and replace any lost fodder.
“I know from my engagement with effected farmers that this has been a long and difficult road for them. I hope that today will allow them to replace the land that got badly damaged by floods in the storm, and replace any lost fodder,” she said.
“I’d like to thank Minister Heydon for continuing the hard work of the last government and delivering on this promise.
“We must now work alongside farmers in the Cooley Peninsula to ensure we are ready for the next adverse weather system, to ensure their lands and farms are more resilient into the future.
