Local Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has encouraged eligible Louth applicants to apply to a new funding initiative announced to support the development of the all-island bioeconomy.
The initiative was announced by McGreehan’s party colleague, Minister for Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue and Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Andrew Muir MLA. The Shared Island Bioeconomy Demonstration Initiative will pilot and demonstrate the bioeconomy in action across the island of Ireland, as a key objective of the government’s Bioeconomy Action Plan 2023-2025.
Senator McGreehan said: “The Shared Island Bioeconomy Demonstration Initiative will advance sustainable opportunities on an all-island basis from biomass produced from both land and marine areas through the development of innovative, higher added value biobased products and solutions, with clear climate and environmental benefits.
“I am delighted that the initiative has been enabled by an allocation of €7 million from the Shared Island Initiative. Shared Island is so important to build and support cross border communities and we must continue to do all we can to enable all stakeholders on the island to work together collaboratively.
“Information events on the funding will take place on March 22 at Dundalk Institute of Technology, and on April 19 at the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) research farm in Hillsborough, Northern Ireland.
“I strongly encourage primary producers, businesses, and innovators in Louth that collaborate across the border and are focused on demonstrating new, scalable, commercial bioeconomy solutions for the agri-food and marine sectors across the island to apply.”
