Louth Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the confirmation from her party colleague, Minister of State for Sport Thomas Byrne, that Dundalk FC will receive “most, if not all of,” the €500,000 it is seeking to develop the pitch and lights at Oriel Park.

Minister Byrne stated the Government was bringing forward this announcement to be helpful to the club at this “critical juncture.”

Senator McGreehan said: “This announcement is hugely welcome because football in Dundalk and north Louth is of such importance. What has happened over previous days and weeks at Dundalk FC is very worrying.

“I hope this announcement can bring some relief, it has long been known in the community that the pitch and the lights are in need of refurbishment so I am glad that the club is in line to receive most if not all of the €500,000 they have applied for.

“My party colleague Minister Byrne’s department has provided significant financial support to Dundalk FC for investment in capital infrastructure over the past 20 years under the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP), totalling €1.3 million.

“I will continue to do everything I can to support the club and I am hoping for positive news regarding the future of the club in the next few days as it is so important for the entire community that there is a club to support in Dundalk again next year.”
