Making Crime Pay: Deputy McGreehan welcomes €252k in funding for community projects from seized crime proceeds

Deputy McGreehan and Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has welcomed a €252,388 boost for Louth community projects from funds seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau and An Garda Síochána.

Under the Community Safety Fund announced this morning, €109,388 has been allocated to Connect Family Resource Centre’s Ár Áit (Our Place) project and €143,000 to Drogheda Women & Children’s Refuge Centre’s Wings of Change project.

Deputy McGreehan said:
“This is a hugely positive initiative that takes money once linked to criminal activity and reinvests it directly into our communities for the benefit of local people.

“Through this initiative, funds seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau and An Garda Síochána are supporting projects across Louth, delivering practical results where they are needed most. This is real restorative justice in action.”

€4.4 million has been allocated through the Community Safety Fund to 42 projects nationally.

This represents a 33% increase on the €3 million awarded in 2024, with the number of funded projects now doubled.

Deputy McGreehan went on to say:
“It shows that the work of our Gardaí and law enforcement agencies does more than disrupt crime and seize its proceeds; it also helps build stronger and safer communities by funding projects that make a real difference to the people of Louth.”

Successful projects this year cover a wide range of areas, including domestic, sexual and gender-based violence (DSGBV),countering drug-related intimidation, addiction recovery and substance misuse as well as violence reduction initiatives.

Deputy McGreehan concluded:
“I would like to commend the Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan for his work on this initiative and to congratulate the local projects that have received this funding. It is a testament to the fantastic work they do and I look forward to seeing this initiative go from strength to strength in the future.”
