Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has said a new childcare capital scheme gives providers a real opportunity to expand their services and deliver more places for families across the county.

The €10 million Building Blocks Extension Scheme Phase 2, announced by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley, will support both community and private providers to extend their premises and increase capacity.

Under the scheme, community providers can apply for grants ranging from €100,000 to €530,000, while private providers can access funding between €50,000 and €265,000.

Deputy McGreehan said the scheme is a practical move that will make a difference for families on the ground.

“Parents are really feeling the pressure when it comes to childcare, especially in those early years. This funding gives providers here in Louth a real chance to expand and create more places where they are needed.

“It is about backing services that are already doing great work in their communities and helping them grow so more families can access childcare closer to home.”

The funding is focused on increasing full time places for children aged one to three, where demand is highest. All projects supported under the scheme must deliver additional capacity and incorporate Universal Design Guidelines to ensure services are accessible and inclusive.

Deputy McGreehan added:

“We are building on what is already working. Phase 1 is already delivering new places, and this next phase is about going further and increasing capacity again.

“Ultimately, this is about making childcare more available and more affordable for families, and making sure we are supporting providers to meet that demand here in Louth.”

The scheme forms part of the wider Building Blocks Capital Programme under the National Development Plan and will run alongside ongoing investment in the Core Funding and National Childcare Scheme.
