Further fodder and fertiliser support being finalised
Fianna Fáil TD Erin McGreehan has said the fuel support scheme will be extended to help farmers struggling with rising costs.
The Louth TD raised the increased pressures farmers face when she spoke in the Dáil on on Thursday.
She received Government confirmation that the scheme will be extended and that the details will be finalised in the coming days.
“Farmers and fishers across the country are being squeezed by rising fuel costs, fertilisers and fodder costs,” Deputy McGreehan said.
“These are essential costs,” she said. “A fishing boat can’t go to sea without fuel. A farmer can simply skip the buy it of winter feed. Rural families also depend on their cars, so they feel pressure at work and at home. How is the government going to continue supporting rural communities, farmers, and fishers?”
Tánaiste Simon Harris thanked Deputy McGreehan for raising the timely issue. He said Minister Jack Chambers and Minister Martin Heyden were meeting to discuss the matter on Thursday.
Minister Harris said: “We were all at the ploughing last week, we heard very clearly three issues; fuel, fodder and fertiliser. I call them the three ‘F’s’.
“There will be support for farmers with fodder and fertiliser.”
He added that the government is “now working to extend the fuel support scheme for farmers and I expect the details of that to be finalised in the coming days”.
