Local Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy McGreehan, has warmly welcomed a key measure in Budget 2026 that will significantly benefit family carers across County Louth. The Government has announced a major increase in the Carer’s Allowance income disregard, allowing more carers to qualify for support while easing financial pressure on those already receiving it.
This marks the first step towards fulfilling the Programme for Government commitment to abolish the means test.
Crucially, the increase goes beyond the Pre-Budget asks made by Family Carers Ireland, who had called for a rise to €750 for single carers and €1,500 for couples.
Under Budget 2026:
- The weekly income disregard for a single person will rise from €375 to €1,000
- The weekly income disregard for a couple will rise from €750 to €2,000
“This is a transformative and long-overdue change for carers in Louth,” Deputy McGreehan said. “Family carers are the unsung heroes of our communities. They provide round-the-clock care, often at great personal and financial cost. This Budget measure recognises their contribution and gives them the support and flexibility they deserve.”
Deputy McGreehan praised the advocacy of carer organisations and local families who have long campaigned for reform: “I’ve met carers in Dundalk and over Louth who’ve had to make impossible choices between earning a modest income and keeping vital supports. This change will make a real difference in their lives.”
The increased income disregard is part of a broader commitment to improving supports for carers, including access to respite services, mental health supports, and flexible employment options.
Deputy McGreehan concluded: “I will continue to advocate for policies that recognise their work, protect their wellbeing, and ensure they are not left behind.”
