The current situation in Palestine, with the continued killing of innocent people in Gaza, was chief among the topics when TD, Erin McGreehan, met with the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland in Dublin last week.

Deputy McGreehan was at the Palestine Embassy in Leeson Street at the invitation of Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid. She was briefed on the deteriorating situation in Gaza, where only last Thursday an Israeli strike on the Strip killed 23, including a family of 10.

Also discussed was the Occupied Territories Bill, which Deputy McGreehan strongly supported in her election campaign last year. Some of her gatherings were targeted, protestors oblivious of the fact that she was strongly in favour of the Bill.

Since last week’s meeting, Deputy McGreehan has said that the Ambassador expressed her appreciation for the support of her country was receiving in Ireland.

“She was grateful for Ireland’s recognition of Palestine as a state, and was keen to highlight the support of not only the government, but also the people of Ireland.

“Ireland had led the way in recognising Palestine as a state, she said, and was hopeful that other countries would follow. It’s being said that France may also join with Ireland, Norway and Spain in its support, maybe as soon as June.”

Deputy said it was heartbreaking to read and learn of the killings. “As a mother of four, it upsets when I see pictures of children being included among those being killed on a daily basis.

“Dr Abdalmajid emphasised the need for this war to be highlighted at every possible level. I will certainly have it on the agenda for parliament meetings,” she added.
