To the right is DkIT President, Michael Mulvey who is wearing a grey suit, white shirt and purple patterned tie.

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan has said that the deep collaboration between Dundalk Institute of Technology and Maynooth University is becoming a promising one.

Deputy McGreehan raised the possibility of university status for Dundalk IT to the Minister for Higher Education, James Lawless, an exchange in which she was met with optimism.

Speaking on the matter McGreehan stated: “I had very positive engagement with the Minister on the need and benefits that Dundalk IT achieving University status would have on the college.

Dundalk IT is the only technological institution to not achieve university status in collaboration with another college.

“Dundalk IT is of huge importance to me, and I am an avid advocate of it achieving its university status. I believe they have now found the right fit with Maynooth University, and the two compliment each other really well.

In his response to Deputy McGreehan, Minister Lawless said he was in support of this progressive partnership.

He said that Dundalk IT now has a pathway into the future of achieving university status, although he didn’t want to set out a path or predict what might happen.

McGreehan said: “I am delighted to hear of the Minister’s support for the deepening progressive relationship between Dundalk IT and Maynooth.

“Dundalk IT has offered so much to not only the local community in which its based, but nationally also. It is an attractive option for students and staff to progress through a learning environment that is first class,” she said.

Concluding she said, “I believe we must achieve University status by 2028, and I look forward to working alongside the Minister to achieve this over the lifetime of this government.”
