The need for repairs to a wall bordering Flurry River and the Deerpark Road, in Ravensale, came into focus last weekend following the heavy rain last month.
The wall was badly damaged in the floods of two years ago, when water flowing from the mountains caused huge damage to houses and other buildings and their perimeters over a wide area of the Cooley Peninsula.
Roads became rivers, with the Deerpark Road covered in many feet of water with the overflow of the Flurry. Parts of the dividing wall were damaged, leaving dangerous gaps.
Temporary structures were put in place, but these consisted of only polls and tape, which offered very little protection.
Deputy Erin McGreehan has said that having been contacted by householders in the area, she drove the road over the weekend, and was taken aback by what she witnessed.
“There are at least five gaping holes in the wall leading from the Ravensdale Road and Carlingford Road, and each represents a danger to motorists, in particular. It’s a winding road, which makes driving on it requiring great care, especially at night.
“I plan to establish who has responsibility for repairs, which will have to be carried out as soon as possible. Winter’s coming on, and as there’s always a danger of repeat of the floods of two years ago, it can’t be done soon enough,” she said.
