Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has welcomed the Government’s decision today to approve the recommendations contained in the scoping report into allegations of abuse, which will pave the way for the publication of the report and the establishment of a commission of investigation.
Speaking following the Cabinet decision, Deputy McGreehan said:
“Today’s outcome would not have been possible without the bravery of survivors, the tireless campaigning of Dignity4Patients and the determination of those who fought to ensure their voices were heard. Their courage and persistence has brought us to this point.
“Many questions remain unanswered and the survivors deserve to know how this abuse caused by this vile man was allowed to happen and continue for so long.
“Today’s commitment from Government to establish a formal inquiry will provide an opportunity to uncover the full truth and will hopefully bring some comfort and reassurance to those who have suffered and campaigned for justice for so many years.
“The victims of this vile abuse deserve answers. The peace of mind they have sought can only come when the full circumstances surrounding what happened are properly examined and the truth is established.
“What has been achieved by this group of survivors and campaigners should serve as an inspiration to others. Their determination and bravery has ensured that their voices could no longer be ignored.”
