Deputy Erin McGreehan TD has expressed serious concern following reports of a significant fish kill on the River Glyde in County Louth, describing the incident as deeply disappointing and a grave concern for the local environment and angling community.

“This is an extremely worrying and disappointing development,” said Deputy McGreehan. “The River Glyde is a wonderful natural resource for this county — for our wildlife, our anglers, and the communities who live along its banks. A fish kill of this nature causes real and lasting damage to our local ecosystem, and it is something I feel very strongly about.”

Deputy McGreehan confirmed she has been in contact with Minister of State Timmy Dooley, who has responsibility for fisheries, and that he shares her deep concern over the incident.

“I spoke with Minister Dooley and he is also very concerned about what has happened on the River Glyde. He is taking this matter extremely seriously and is committed to ensuring that all appropriate resources and support are made available as this investigation progresses. I very much welcome his personal engagement and commitment on this.”

Deputy McGreehan said she is glad to see Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) already on-site and conducting a thorough investigation.

“I am pleased to see that IFI have responded swiftly and are already on the ground carrying out a thorough investigation. It is critical that we establish the cause as quickly as possible, and I have every confidence that IFI will approach this with the diligence and professionalism the situation demands. I want to thank the officers on the ground for their prompt response.”

Deputy McGreehan also encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed anything unusual on or near the River Glyde in recent days to contact IFI’s confidential hotline on 0818 34 74 24. Every piece of information could be helpful to the investigation.”

The Deputy said she will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep local communities updated as the investigation proceeds.

“The River Glyde is precious to this county and to the people who cherish it. I will be watching this situation carefully and will do everything I can to support a full and thorough investigation.”
