Board Member of Women’s Aid Dundalk and TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, says the introduction of a Domestic Violence Travel Supplement will provide crucial support for those fleeing domestic violence in Louth.
The new scheme is designed to ensure that those fleeing domestic violence can travel without delay or unnecessary barriers.
Deputy McGreehan said:
“Domestic violence is an issue that affects every corner of the country and for many victims, the cost of travel can be an obstacle to getting to safety.
“I welcome Minister Calleary’s introduction of this new travel supplement, which will make a real and immediate difference for victims of domestic violence.”
Under the scheme, victims of domestic violence will be entitled to the Travel Supplement without any means test for the first three months, ensuring immediate access to support at a critical time.
A further three‑month extension may be provided thereafter, subject to a review and a standard means assessment.
Deputy McGreehan commented:
“This targeted approach mirrors the existing Rent Supplement arrangements for victims of domestic violence and recognises the reality that immediate support is required when someone makes the decision to leave an unsafe situation.”
The supplement will be administered through the Supplementary Welfare Allowance scheme by Community Welfare Officers, with payments tailored to individual circumstances and essential travel needs.
There are no fixed rates, allowing flexibility depending on the costs involved.
Minister Calleary introduced the measure following engagement with key stakeholder organisations, including Cuan-funded service providers, Women’s Aid, Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and Safe Ireland.

“This new Travel Supplement reinforces the Government’s zero tolerance approach to domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. Fianna Fáil remains committed to supporting victims and ensuring that no one is prevented from getting to safety because of cost.”
