Fianna Fáil TD Erin McGreehan, welcomes €22,456,092 of investment in regional and national roads in County Louth.
As part of today’s announcement road projects to benefit in Louth include:
- Ardee By-Pass (N52)
- Port Access Northern Cross Route
- N02 Castle Street Ardee
- N2 R169 Junction
- N53 Hackballscross to Rassan
- N52 Bothar naMbo Pavement
The funding comes as part of an overall funding package of €1.5 billion announced today by Minister Darragh O’Brien. €718 million has been allocated for regional and local roads as part of the funding which will allow approximately 2,800 kilometres of road to be maintained and 2,330 kilometres to be improved.
Speaking on the announcement, Deputy McGreehan said:
“I am delighted to welcome significant investment in our regional and national roads here in Louth. This funding will make a real difference in communities right across the county allowing safer roads and more efficient journeys.
“I am particularly delighted to see Ardee By-Pass included today. This project is critical for connectivity across the county, and I am keen to see it progress quickly to allow commuters and those who use the road to have access to increased connectivity and reliable transportation.”
Deputy McGreehan went on to say:
“Fianna Fáil is committed to maintaining and strengthening our national and regional road networks right across the country. These roads are used daily for many across the county. Today’s investment ensure that our roads remain safe and meet the needs of all road users.
“Investing in road infrastructure is critical for supporting the growth of the local economy, making daily commutes safer and more efficient and for ensuring the road infrastructure we have is sustained into the future.”

The main features of the 2026 investment programme for Regional and Local roads include:
• €350m for road pavement strengthening works;
• €77m for preventative surface dressing work;
• €86m for maintenance and strengthening works for which local authorities have discretion in the selection of roads;
• €70m for Specific and Strategic Regional and Local Roads Projects;
• €18m for bridge rehabilitation works;
• €14m for safety improvement works;
• €18m for drainage works;
• €16.2m for Community Involvement Schemes;
• €16.5m for climate change adaptation/resilience works;
• €12m for Strategic Rehabilitation Regional Road; and
• Miscellaneous grants are also provided during the year for a number of projects and pilot initiatives including speed limits, salt purchase, training, asset management and conducting pavement surveys.
Eight NDP projects have been completed to date and other strategic projects currently at construction stage include:
- Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road
- Tralee Northern Relief Road
- R498 Nenagh/Thurles (Latteragh) Upgrade
- Athenry Relief Road
In line with established practice, local authorities are advised each year by the Department to set aside a minimum of 10% contingency from their annual Discretionary Grant allocation to deal with severe weather events and damage to the network as they arise.
