Installation of new filters to improve water quality for customers in Dundalk

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has received confirmation that major works to address seasonal drinking water discolouration in Dundalk will proceed as part of the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant upgrade, scheduled to begin in 2026.

Following the success of a pilot study at the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant, Uisce Éireann has approved permanent upgrade works which are expected to commence on site later this year.

This represents a significant step forward in tackling intermittent water discolouration affecting customers in Dundalk and surrounding areas.

The Cavan Hill supply has experienced seasonal discolouration issues, mainly caused by elevated levels of naturally occurring manganese in raw water during the summer months.

In response, Uisce Éireann carried out a pilot study in 2024, testing new filters specifically designed to remove manganese. The trial delivered a substantial reduction in manganese levels, paving the way for a full-scale upgrade.

Speaking following the announcement, Deputy McGreehan said:

“Water discolouration has been a huge concern for people across Dundalk for a long time. I have heard directly from families and businesses who were worried, frustrated, and rightly asking why this issue kept recurring.

“No one should have to question the quality of their drinking water.

“People need confidence that when they turn on the tap, the water is clean, clear, and safe. This investment is overdue, but it is welcome, and it must be delivered without delay.

“Short term measures have helped, but this plant upgrade will deliver lasting improvements. I will continue to engage directly with Uisce Éireann and ensure that local concerns remain front and centre as the project progresses.”

The contract to deliver the upgrade works is expected to be awarded early this year. Uisce Éireann has committed to keeping all stakeholders informed as the project moves forward.
