Fianna Fáil TD Erin McGreehan has today welcomed that 588 children in County Louth will benefit from Newborn Baby Grants.

As part of Budget 2025, the Newborn Baby Grant was announced for a newborn or adopted child to the tune of €280 with a date placement on or after the 1st  of December 2024. This is in addition to their regular first months Child Benefit payment of €140.

The newborn baby or adopted child grant is paid automatically with Child Benefit payments, the grant will give a much-needed boost to new parents, according to Deputy McGreehan.

“I am delighted to hear today that 588 children will benefit from the Newborn Baby Grant across Louth. Parents and children need support especially in the first few months, and this grant alongside the Child Benefit payment will be a great financial help.

She added: “The adjustment to the life of a newborn baby can be so rewarding, but tough for parents at times aswell. We want to ensure that we support parents during this time, and this grant will do just that.

In total from 19,429 recipients, 19,750 children will benefit from the Newborn Baby Grant.

In a full year it is expected that Newborn Baby Grants will be paid in respect of 54,000 children at a cost of €15 million.

McGreehan concluded by saying the grant is a targeted measure to improve the lives of young children, babies and young families, and that must always take precedent.

“In Fianna Fáil, we are committed to supporting and improving the lives of children, babies, and young families,” she said. “We want to ensure that this bonus payment will support parents financially with the associated costs that come with new babies.
