Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Deputy Erin McGreehan, has commended the proactive approach regarding the requirement for parents to notify the NCSE of the need for placement in Special Schools or Special Classes.
Under the new measure, parents are being asked to notify the NCSE of the need for Special Class or Special School placement by the 1st of October 2025. This is four months earlier than this academic year.
McGreehan’s party colleague and Minister of State Michael Moynihan, has been keen to advance this development since his appointment.
McGreehan said: “This is a really positive development. Every child across the state is entitled to an education. For far too long now we have heard stories of children not being able to get the school placements they need or access to placements in special classes.
“I’d like to thank my party colleague Minister Michael Moynihan on his forward thinking on this matter, it will be much welcomed by parents in my own constituency of Louth,” she said.
Deputy McGreehan has urged all parents in her constituency of Louth who have children in need of placements in Special Schools or Special Classes to notify the NCSE by October 1st, 2025.
“I’d like to urge all parents across Louth who are desperately trying to get their children a placement in a Special Class or Special School to notify that to the NCSE by the 1st of October.
The intention is to then sanction placements by December 31st this year ahead of the start of the 26/27 school year in September 2026.
She added: “It is vital we get your child the resources he or she might need. This is a great move by the Minister, with the aim to sanctioning places by the end of the year.
In conclusion McGreehan said: “The aim here is to ease pressure on parents and families, whilst also providing clarity on where their children will be attending school in September 2026.
“We want to provide clarity to these families and that’s why we are moving that notification period earlier this year.
