Local Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has encouraged schools in Louth to apply for the Solar for Schools Programme.

The scheme provides eligible schools with a 6-kilowatt peak of roof-mounted solar PV, which equates to approximately 14 solar panels.

This comes as Darragh O’Brien Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications, and Minister for Education Helen McEntee also encouraged the schools to apply for the scheme.

All counties around the country are eligible to apply, and there has been a great uptake in the scheme in 2024.

Speaking on the scheme McGreehan said: “I would encourage all schools in my constituency of Louth to apply for the Solar for Schools Programme.

“Reducing our carbon footprint is a very important for Fianna Fáil. This scheme is a fantastic opportunity for us to reduce our carbon footprint, starting in our local communities,” she said.

Since the launch of the programme in November 2023, more than 3,290 schools have been approved to progress to tender for installation of PV panels with more than 1,040 installations confirmed as completed so far.

“Applications are due to close on Friday March 7th, and this is a fantastic opportunity for schools to decrease their electricity costs through the use of renewable energy,” she concluded.
