Senator Erin McGreehan has been given confirmation by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien that an additional €570,000 has been allocated to Louth County Council for Housing Adaptation Grants.
Deputy McGreehan said: “Louth County Council applied recently for a further Exchequer allocation of €570,000 more than has already committed by the Department of Housing.
“I’m delighted to receive confirmation from my party colleague Minister Darragh O’Brien that this request for additional funds has been granted by the Department.”
“It follows engagement I had with Department of Housing officials raising the need for additional funds. I also highlighted this important issue in the Seanad in recent weeks.
“I trust this will ensure that Louth County Council will begin to accept application again for this critically important assistance for families.”
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage provides funding to local authorities under the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and People with a Disability, to assist people in private houses to make their accommodation more suitable for their needs.
The detailed administration of the scheme including assessment, approval, prioritisation and apportionment is the responsibility of local authorities.
In 2023, Louth County Council received an allocation of over €2.3 million comprised of over €1.86 million Exchequer funding and over €0.46 million to be funded from the local authority’s own resources.
