McGreehan welcomes completion of works to end the discharge of untreated wastewater in Omeath

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the completion of works to construct of a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant and supporting infrastructure that will provide wastewater treatment for the first time for Omeath and surrounding areas.

The works, comprising of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant, Pump Station and associated sewer network will mean wastewater is adequately treated and meets appropriate standards before being safely discharged into Carlingford Lough.

Senator McGreehan said: “I am absolutely delighted Uisce Éireann has completed the works to end the discharge of untreated wastewater in Omeath. The completed works will bring enormous benefits locally in terms of health, integrity of the environment and improved water quality.

“I’ve long advocated for these works locally and have followed their progress closely since the sod was turned on the works almost two years ago. The works have been delivered jointly by Uisce Éireann and Louth County Council and, now they have been completed, will mean wastewater is adequately treated and meets appropriate standards before being safely discharged into Carlingford Lough.

“The completed works will enhance the amenity value of Omeath, including through protecting recreational swimming, fishing, kayaking and sightseeing and also enable social and economic development and growth, including the delivery of housing, within the Omeath area for current and future generations.”
