Local Fianna Fáil Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Children, Disability, Equality and Integration, Erin McGreehan, has encouraged responses to a new public consultation on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) launched by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Disability Matters.

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters has opened the consultation to ask Disabled Persons Organisations and Self Advocates to make a submission on the UNCRPD and the reality of human rights for people with disabilities in Ireland, with a specific focus on highlighting solutions and what is working in local areas.

The closing date for submissions is 5 p.m. on Friday, 15 March 2024. Information on how to make a submission is here.

Senator McGreehan, who is a member of the Joint Committee, said: “It is important that we get as many responses as possible as we keep track of how we are, as a State, making UNCRPD a reality for people with disabilities. The UNCRPD asks countries like Ireland to ensure that people with disabilities are being treated the same and have access to human rights like everyone else.

“There are many Disabled Persons Organisations and Self-Advocates in Louth that have made their voices heard on policy in this area and I am strongly encouraging them to make a submission on the UNCRPD and the reality of human rights for people with disabilities.”
