Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has called for a ‘Yes Yes’ vote in the upcoming referendums on Family and Care on March 8th.
Senator McGreehan made the comments as Fianna Fáil launched its campaign ahead of the referendums.
Senator McGreehan said: “I’m very much looking forward to campaigning for a ‘Yes Yes’ vote in the upcoming referendums. The referendums are hugely welcome in that we now, as a country, have an opportunity to recognise that not all families are based on marriage, that there should not be a tier or a hierarchy of family, and that all families should be acknowledged by our Constitution.
“Families are diverse, they have always been and most of us acknowledge that not all families are based in marriage. Our Constitution states ‘Family as the natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society.’ All types of families should be acknowledged as that ‘natural’ group of society. Families are made up of many types of households like married couples, unmarried couples, lone parents, grandparents and grandchildren.
“Our Constitution should acknowledge diversity in family. The changes being proposed in the referendums are an acknowledgement that this country is growing, that it is progressive and that we are constantly changing.
“Fianna Fáil is extremely proud of the 1937 Constitution. It has rightly endured in so many ways. Society never stands still – our Constitution is a living document and we now have the chance to change it to reflect the more inclusive Ireland of today. I strongly urge people to come out and vote ‘Yes’ and ‘Yes’ on March 8th to update and modernise our Constitution and reflect our progressive society.”
